Confrontation Fields
Clinical Procedure

- Patient and Examiner sit 4 to 5 feet apart, both at the same eye
level.
- Patient occludes one eye with the palm of their hand.
- Examiner instructs the patient to fixate at all times on the examiners
nose.
- Explain to the patient that you are testing their "side vision" or
peripheral vision.
- Explain that you will be holding up 1, 2, or 5 fingers on one or both
hands. They are to tell you how many fingers they see.
- With patient fixating examiner's nose, patient is shown examiners
fists.
- Ask patient if both hands are approximately equal in color or
brightness.
- Present patient with fingers (1, 2 or 5) with hands held
approximately one meter in front of the patient.
- Keep in mind that you are performing a gross test of visual field,
beyond the central visual field of 20 to 30 degrees.
- Test all four quadrants.
- Switch eyes and repeat for the other eye.
- Record your results.
