                                                STUDENT COMPUTER INFORMATION

No restrictions exist concerning the use of computers or software other than those formally supported by the university but students are advised that NSU currently is a "Microsoft PC " campus.  Little university support currently is provided for users of Macintosh or other computers employing operating systems other than Microsoft Windows.  Faculty is provided with Microsoft Office software but students are free to use any software that provides the ability to read and write Microsoft Office document formats.

At this time, any computer capable of running Microsoft Windows 95 or higher with Office 97 Professional and a complete installation of the current Netscape or Internet Explorer web browsers should be adequate.  A minimal configuration adequate for current needs is outlined below but students should be reminded that computer technology is evolving very rapidly.  If purchasing a new computer, a Pentium III or 4 (or comparable) processor is recommended with at least 128 Mb RAM and room for future modification and expansion.

Notebook Computers

During the third and fourth years of our program, students may be assigned to various off-campus clinical facilities and may find a portable computer to be preferable to a desktop model.  At this time the College does not require a portable computer but is considering such a requirement for future incoming classes.

Minimum Configuration:

(Capable of running Windows 2000, Office 2000, and current IE and Netscape web browsers.)

200 MHz Pentium processor or better

96 Mb RAM

4 Gb HDD

3.5" FDD and/or higher capacity removable disk drive

CD-ROM

Student Computer Accounts

All NSU students are assigned and are required to maintain an account on the university computer network.  This account includes an NSU e-mail address to which all official electronic announcements and course materials are addressed.  This account also is needed for students to access many course web sites, grades, financial aid information, electronic library, and other services provided by the university and college.  Although local dial-up access to this account is provided, NSU formally requires all students to maintain an additional account with another Internet Service Provider of their own choosing.
