Optometric Theory & Methods Curriculum

Behavioral Objectives

1. The student must demonstrate proficiency in performing the clinical techniques prior to progressing to any clinical sites.

2. The student will understand when it is appropriate to perform a certain procedure to aid in differential diagnosis.

3. The student will understand how to interpret the results obtained with the clinical procedures.

4. The student will understand how the procedure feels to a patient by serving as a patient (both right and left eyes) throughout the semester.

5. The student will understand the theory associated with the procedures taught in the lecture and lab.

Grading:

Course grade will be based on a comprehensive mid-term and/or final examination in the lecture portion of the course and any lab assignments distributed during the semester.

Two lab procedure proficiencies will be scheduled prior to any clinical rotation. The examination and proficiencies must be taken at the scheduled time. A grade of "0" will be given for exams or proficiencies not taken at the scheduled time.

Course grades will not be curved. Grades below 70% are considered failures (See University Handbook)

Incomplete is not a course grade option. Any incomplete activity or assignment will result in failure of the course.

    Attendance and lab participation:

All students must attend their scheduled lab session until the conclusion of the semester. Students must be available during the entire lab session. Students who are not participating as doctors should be acting as patients for other students.

For students who are not in attendance and/or do not practice procedures, their course grade may be lowered by 1 to 10% for each unexcused absence or nonparticipation lab day. Refusal to participate as either doctor or patient will result in a semester course grade of "F" and a charge of "Unprofessional Conduct".
