Elive Frequently Asked Questions

System Settings

Both Java Web Start and eLive! should automatically detect your proxy settings. However, there are occasions when this does not happen automatically, and you are prompted for your proxy information. The following provides you with the steps on finding this information and entering it when prompted.

Step 1:

Windows

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel (or Start, then Settings, then Control Panel)
  2. Double-click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Connections tab.
  4. Click on Lan Settings...
    Windows Internet Options screen
  5. If 'Use a proxy server for your LAN' is checked, record the information listed beside Address and Port. If proxy Address and Port number information is not available or not present, contact your System Administrator.
Local Area Network (LAN) Settings screen
  6. If 'Use a proxy server for your LAN' is checked, but there's nothing next to Address or Port, click the Advanced button and record the numbers next to HTTP (or Gateway). If proxy Address and Port or not present, contact your System Administrator.

Mac

  1. Open your System Preferences
  2. Select Network
  3. Select your connection device
    Mac Network screen
  4. Select the Proxies tab
    MAC Proxy screen
  5. Copy down the information in the Address and Port fields from either Web Proxy or Secure Web Proxy. If this information is not available or not present on your computer, you will need to contact your System Administrator for assistance.
  6. If you get a Java Web Start error when launching into eLive!, you may need to configure the proxy settings for Java Web Start manually. Check Java Web Start errors

Step 2:

  1. Open Java Web Start Application Manager

Windows: Click the Start button and click Programs (or All Programs). Select Java Web Start from the Java Web Start folder

Mac: In the Applications folder, open Utilities, then Java, then Java Web Start.
  2. Click File, then Preferences.
    Java Preferences screen
  3. Under the General tab, under Proxies, select Manual
  4. Using the information you copied earlier, enter your proxy address into the HTTP Proxy field, and port into the HTTP Port field.
Java Web Start Manual Proxy screen
  5. Click OK and close the Java Web Start Application Manager.

Step 3:

The proxy information should pass automatically from Java Web Start to eLive!. If it does not, a Connection Failed error message will appear, and it may be necessary to manually configure the proxy settings in eLive!. In this step, eLive! will be manually configured to use a specified address and port number to connect to a proxy.

  1. Cancel the authentication process by clicking the Cancel button when prompted to try again in the eLive! environment.
Elive Connection Failed Error Message screen
  2. Select Proxy Configuration... from the Session menu.
  3. In the 'Type of proxy server...' field, select 'Use HTTP proxy server'.
  4. Enter the proxy address recorded in the step above into the Server field, and the port number into the Port field.
    Configure Proxy screen
  5. Click OK.
  6. Select Join the Session from the Session menu.
  7. If this fails, go back to step 3 and select Use HTTPS proxy server.

Configuration Difficulties

If a connection still cannot be established to the session, contact your System Administrator. Further configuration may be required to allow connection to an eLive! session.

System Administrator Information

This information is intended for a System Administrator in the event that the steps above prove unsuccessful.

Addresses, Ports and Protocols1

If a user is attempting connection to a session running on one of eLive's servers, it will be made to one of:

  • el01.eLive.com (216.220.49.212)
  • el02.eLive.com (216.220.49.215)

eLive! connects on one of two ports - 2187 or 80. Access through either port to one of the above listed servers is required to make a connection to an eLive! session. Communication is in a proprietary protocol called the Collaborative Communication Framework (CCF), which is layered on a TCP transport protocol.

NOTE:

  • Only authorized clients may connect to an eLive! server
  • The connection is always initiated from the client
  • After connection, only the eLive! server may send data to the client

When using eLive! for the first time, you may need to configure or confirm the settings of your Personal Firewall.

  1. You will need to allow Java Web Start (javaws.exe) access to the internet - this may require both inbound and outbound connections.
  2. eLive! may require access separately - you will need to allow this on both inbound and outbound connections as well.
  3. You may be prompted to allow IeEmbed access to the internet. eLive! will use this for web site access in the session so you will need to allow this also.

Please be advised that the NSU Help Desk cannot assist you with configuring your firewall, as it is considered a third-party software. Please contact technical support for your firewall software for assistance.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes a new Windows Firewall. As a result, users of Elluminate Live! may experience security prompts when trying to launch a session. One such prompt occurs the first time a session launches after the installation of SP-2.

You may be prompted with a Windows Security Alert indicating that the firewall has "blocked some of the features of this program" and asking "Do you wish to keep blocking this program?" The program indicated is "javaw". Click Unblock. This will add an exception to the Windows Firewall Programs and Services list allowing you to run future sessions without seeing a repeat of the security message.
