Before installing Java, be sure that no older versions are on your computer. If there are, you will need to uninstall the older version before installing the new one. Microsoft Java or the Sun JRE can be uninstalled by navigating through the Windows menu structure as follows:
NOTE: These instructions are for PC users. If you are a MAC user and have OS X, click here. If you have OS 9 and earlier, click here.
- Click the Start button on your computer.
- Click Control Panel (If you do not see Control Panel listed, click on Settings, then click on Control Panel.)
- Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
- Look for Java 2 Runtime Environment. If you have it, click Remove Sun Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition. Please remove all copies or versions of Java, and restart your computer.
- Click here to get the correct Java plug-in and Java Web Start.
This may happen if you either 1) have more than one Java 2 Runtime Environment (J2RE) installed on your computer or 2) have a firewall preventing Java Web Start from receiving the list of resources required from the Elluminate Live! server.
- Click the Start button and go to Programs (or All Programs).
- Go to the Java Web Start folder and click Java Web Start.
- Click File, then Preferences.
- Click on the Java tab and uncheck Enabled beside all but the latest version of the J2RE. Typically the latest version is the one with the highest number. (You may also delete unused J2RE by clicking on them and selecting the Remove button.)
If you are running behind a firewall, configure your computer's firewall to allow Java Web Start to download JAR files. This may require the intervention of a System Administrator.
