John Legend to Speak at Life 101 on Nov. 9

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter-pianist John Legend will be the guest speaker at NSU's "Life 101: Personally Speaking" series on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on NSU's main campus.

Tickets are free to all NSU students and faculty and staff members with a valid NSU ID. Tickets are available now at the reception desk in the Athletics and Student Affairs (ASA) building (located between the Rosenthal and Mailman-Hollywood buildings). Advanced calling to reserve/hold tickets is prohibited. Due to limited seating, a maximum of two tickets per person will be issued. A valid NSU employee/student ID must be shown at the time of issuance. Tickets are limited for this event and are first-come, first-served.

Legend's debut album Get Lifted in 2004, driven in part by the hit singles "Ordinary People" and "Used To Love U," earned him an astounding eight Grammy nominations — he won Best New Artist, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance ("Ordinary People") and Best R&B album — and sold more than three million copies worldwide. His sophomore album Once Again is fueled by intelligence, intuition, sensuality, and spirit and features collaborations with Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West, Craig Street and will.i.am.

Legend has also lent his voice to end poverty in the rural parts of Africa as founder of the Show Me Campaign. He was inspired to visit the remote villages in Ghana and Tanzania after reading End of Poverty by Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs. The Show Me Campaign raises funds to implement practical solutions to end poverty, including funding resources for safe drinking water, free and nutritious lunches for school children, bed nets to prevent the mosquito-borne spread of malaria, fertilizer to improve the crops of farmers and building local medical facilities. Recently, Legend was awarded the Humanitarian Award for Global Change by the Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), recognizing his work with the Show Me Campaign.

The overall goal of "Life 101" is to bring leaders from business, entertainment, politics and athletics to our campus. By meeting these guest speakers, the NSU community is educated and inspired by their life accomplishments and “life lessons” learned along the way. The interactive, 60-minute interview program is hosted by a faculty member and allows students and the university community to ask questions directly to the guest at the end of the program.
