DisAbilities Expo Highlights Services for People with Disabilities
The 30th annual DisAbilities Expo, held on NSU’s main campus on Oct. 17, featured informational seminars and more than 60 exhibitors with information on products and services for many different types of disabilities, including developmental, sensory, emotional or physical disabilities. Other highlights at the Expo, which was held in the Alvin Sherman Library and the Don Taft University Center, included art activities, face painting, hand drumming, sign language Bingo, and a performance by Speaking Hands, which sang and signed inspirational selections for the large crowd that gathered around. Wheelchair basketball was also featured, with games between the Miami HEAT Wheels and the Orlando Magic Wheels, followed by members of NSU men’s and women’s basketball team in wheelchairs battling it out on the court with the Miami HEAT Wheels.
"The DisAbilities Expo is a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn about valuable resources and services available to individuals with disabilities in Broward County, including accessible transportation, assistive technology, local outreach agencies, parks and recreation, and much more," said Arlene Giczkowski, director of NSU’s Office of Student Disability Services and a member of the Expo planning committee. The Expo also highlighted the "Art Knows No Disabilities" exhibit which was on display in the Don Taft University Center.
