Fischler School Student’s Educational Program Adopted by Wharton School
Fischler School of Education and Human Services student Marisela Vincentelli along with Daryl Hulce of the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation developed a unique educational program for elementary school students called the Kraft Basket Challenge and students at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania took notice. The Kraft Basket Challenge is an activity that motivates elementary school students to practice their math skills. During the hour-long program, a basket of various Kraft products including Oreos, Macaroni and Cheese, and CapriSun is brought into the students’ classroom. After inspecting the basket of products, students log on to the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation Web site where they answer multiple-choice math questions about the products using a fact sheet containing prices and nutritional information. The student who answers the most questions correctly in the shortest amount of time wins the basket full of products. After Hulce and Vincentelli successfully piloted the Kraft Basket Challenge with a fifth grade class at Nova Blanche Forman Elementary School, a team of Wharton Management 100 students adopted the program to implement in four Philadelphia elementary schools. Students in Wharton’s Management 100 program have chosen to work with the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation at the Fischler School on various initiatives consecutively for five years.
