Lorraine Breffni, director of Early Childhood Programs at NSU’s Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies, recently led a discussion on language development for children in the third of the “Mom’s Morning” seminars, a collaborative series of parent workshops through MSI and Whole Foods Market.

The language development overview provided knowledge on typical language milestones for children. Breffni emphasized the importance of spending time talking to your baby to help develop language skills. She also encouraged parents to make a habit of reading to children at an early age to encourage a lifelong love of reading.

Workshops are held each second Tuesday of the month in the Whole Foods Market, Plantation. In addition to the free lecture, moms also receive a free muffin, a cup of coffee and a five-minute massage from Whole Foods Market ‘My Massage Corner.’

Upcoming workshops include:

July 14, 2009, 9- 10:30 a.m., Bedtime Challenges:
Explore various alternatives and strategies that provide nurturing approaches to the bedtime routine (Birth- 5 years)
