University School Science Class Launches Rockets
Students in Gary Scott Brown’s 8th grade physical science class at University School of NSU recently studied the concept of rocketry through a unique, hands-on experience. Students built and personally customized their own model rockets and then launched them from an electrical launch controller. The group enjoyed following the trajectory path of their rockets and retrieving their models upon landing. About 125 rockets were safely launched. Students were not only able to experience first-hand the real-world application of space science, but in class also enjoyed learning about the successful mission of the Space Shuttle Atlantis and its repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. The physical science curriculum also covered astronomy and was supported by various media including the www.nasa.gov website and movies “October Sky” and “The Right Stuff.” Brown, who recently received his doctorate in Instructional Technology and Distance Education from NSU, estimates that he has launched more than 600 rockets with his students during his tenure at University School.
