NSU Math Professor Guest Lectures University School’s Honors Math Student

University School’s Upper School Honors Mathematics students recently enjoyed a special presentation by Jerry Bartolomeo, Ph.D., who has just completed his second year as Program Professor in Mathematics for NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services.

Bartolomeo now lives in southern Nevada, but spent his first 19 years with NSU teaching undergraduate mathematics for the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. He also taught several sections of Advanced Placement Calculus at University School during this time.

His May 18 presentation focused on locating lattice points on a line and using those points to solve applied problems. About 45 University School honors math students enjoyed pizza as Bartolomeo introduced them to Diophantine Equations and how they could be used to solve problems, including reconciling a debt by bartering apples and oranges instead of money.

Bartolomeo left students with additional problems to work on, as well as a mathematical riddle to find the age of Diophantus when he died.

“Mathematics is a powerful and indispensable tool for life, so please learn as much as you can with the opportunities you’ve been given,” he told the students during his lecture.
