The Fischler School of Education and Human Services welcomed Margaretha Garhan, Ph.D., dean of education and teacher training at Linkoping University in Sweden, and Cristel Overstrom, also from Linkoping University, on Feb. 29. Following a brief instructional session, professors, administrators, and students participated in a question and answer forum with Garhan and Overstrom on a variety of topics including: the pervasiveness of distance education, cultural literacy and cultural assimilation studies, and the experiential learning inherent in drama and the arts.

Linkoping University (LiU), a major Swedish university with a clear focus on study programs leading to professional degrees, is known as an innovator in education and research. It hosts 26,000 undergraduate students, 1,300 research students, and 17 multidisciplinary departments. Main campuses are located in Linkoping and Norrkoping, 150 km (93 miles) to the southwest of Stockholm.

David Spangler, Ed.D., coordinator of the event, offers further opportunities for cross-cultural studies through a related study abroad program in Sweden entitled “International Arts &Culture Infusion“, which will take place this year from July 15-29. The intensive course allows students the opportunity to work side-by side with European-trained artists to create an interdisciplinary art production and is accredited locally through NSU's FSEHS.
