Optometry Student Honored by Optometric Physicians of Washington
Brian Oulman, a fourth-year optometry student at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry, was awarded the Student Member of the Year 2008 from the Optometric Physicians of Washington. This prestigious honor is granted to a student of optometry who is either from the state of Washington or plans to practice in Washington, has potential to be one of the strong leaders of the profession, and is recognized for his sense of ethics, service, responsibility and professionalism. According to optometry faculty, Janet Leasher, O.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.O., “Mr. Oulman is an unassumingly perceptive, professional, compassionate clinician who deserves recognition for his exceptional dedication to the Northwest, to the profession of optometry and especially to the patients he serves.” As a student at NSU, Oulman performed community outreach in providing vision screenings for kindergarten and first graders in the most impoverished, mostly Afro-Caribbean elementary schools in inner-city Ft. Lauderdale. He participated in professional sports vision screenings of rookies on the Miami Dolphin football team. He also volunteered to provide patient care in Glaucoma Service at the Eye Care Institute at NSU. Upon graduation, Oulman plans to relocate to Spokane, Washington, where he is considering residency training at the Veterans Administration Hospital or to pursue private practice.
