Fischler School Fires Up Students with Miami Heat Tickets
On April 8, a total of 69 students from three Miami-Dade elementary schools experienced how good grades pay off. On March 27 and 28, the Fischler School of Education and Human Services of Nova Southeastern University recognized students from Riverside Elementary, Little River Elementary and Dunbar Elementary schools with free tickets to the April 8 Miami Heat game. A formal presentation was made at each of the schools recognizing students for achieving honor roll status. Each student was rewarded with three game tickets. The students, who are enrolled in the Miami HEAT Academy, along with teachers and administrators from each school, were recognized at the basketball game. The HEAT Academy, an after-school initiative of Miami Heat basketball president Pat Riley, provides students at the three elementary schools with supplemental instruction by certified teachers through a curriculum designed to help students improve in reading and math. The educators work five days a week for two hours a day with the students. The children enjoy theme driven activities and guest presenters, which are provided by the Miami Heat organization. The Fischler School of Education and Human Services is an active partner of the Academy.
