Women’s Rowing Wins Second Consecutive SSC Championship
Nova Southeastern University claimed its second consecutive Sunshine State Conference Rowing Championship by sweeping the 2008 regatta. The Sharks claimed 20 team points with two first-place finishes in the Varsity 8 and the Varsity 4. The University of Tampa was the runner-up with 15 team points. In the first heat of the Varsity 8, Nova Southeastern edged out Rollins with a time of 7:19.3. The Tars closed out with a 7:25.0 showing. In the second heat, Barry had a strong showing, beating Tampa with a time of 7:43.4. The Spartans finished with a time of 8:29.6. In the final of the Varsity 8 the Tars, Sharks and Barry all got off to great starts, even with strong head winds. But Nova Southeastern pulled away over the last 600 meters to win the event with a time of 7:52.8. Barry finished with an 8:02.9 showing. Rollins rounded out the event with a time of 8:29.6. The varsity four featured Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern and the University of Tampa. NSU took the event with an 8:48.1 finish. The Panthers took second place with a time of 8:52.9 and the Spartans finished third at 8:59.7 NSU returns to action on Friday, May 9 as it travels to Philadelphia to participate in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. The Sharks will then set their sights on making their fifth straight NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship appearance, which will take place in Sacramento, Calif., at the end of May.
