Nova Southeastern University’s College of Pharmacy embarked on its first study abroad program to China. Fifty-one pharmacy students, pharmacists and faculty traveled to Beijing and Shanghai for the 18-day program.

The program included the 68-hour course, “Introduction of Traditional Chinese Medicine,” and cultural exploration in Beijing and Shanghai. The academic course was offered to pharmacy students and to practicing pharmacists who took a pre- and post-exam to determine their academic accomplishments. The study abroad program – which was envisioned by Andres Malave, Ph.D., dean of the College of Pharmacy – is coordinated by Leanne Lai, Ph.D., director of the college’s International Program. Carsten Evans, Ph.D., R. Ph., assistant dean for Continuing Education, assisted Lai with the trip.  “In light of the today’s global conflict, we deeply believe in the importance of cross-cultural learning,” Lai said. “International education will be the solution to the world’s strife.”

The traditional medicine course took place in one of the most prestigious universities in China: The Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. During the 60-hour lecture and eight hours of clinical observation, students learned Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophies such as Yin-Yang, Qi Gong, Acupuncture, Tuina, and Herbal Medicine from renowned TCM professors and practicing physicians.

Students were taught how to observe patients and diagnose ailment and diseases using TCM philosophies. They were also taught ways to treat patients and practiced how to correctly apply these methods and administer proper treatments. Clinical observations of TCM were studied at two different TCM hospitals in Beijing, Wang-Jin and Xi Yuan. In addition to academics, this program offered students an opportunity to explore China’s historical sites and acquire an understanding and appreciation of the Chinese culture.

In Beijing, the students visited the Great Wall, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Beihai Park, Peking Opera, a kung fu show, Capital Museum and the Lama Temple. The last four days of the cultural exploration took place in Shanghai, where the students visited the Bund, Jade Buddah Temple, Yu Garden, City Planning Exhibition Center, Nanjing Road, an acrobatic show, Hangzhou, West Lake, Huqingyutang Ancient Pharmacy and the Tea Village. The program will continue in June 2008.
