Women's Tennis Players Alexa Korotkevich and Ulia Talalenko Named First Team All-Conference

Nova Southeastern University women's tennis players Alexa Korotkevich (So., St. Petersburg, Russia) and Ulia Talalenko (Fr., Naples, Fla.) were recently named to the 2006 All-Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis First Team.

The pair was also a First Team selection in doubles play after posting an impressive record of 19-4 as the Sharks' number one combination in the regular season. The duo was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation in doubles competition and No. 3 in the Southeast Region.

"Both of these players have had an immediate impact on our program in their first year on the team," head coach Michael Coleman said. "I am pleased that they have received the recognition for their individual accomplishments, as well as fantastic doubles play throughout the season."

Korotkevich played in the number one position throughout the 2006 season, posting an overall regular season record of 15-6. She was named SSC Player of the Week twice during the season and was ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation and No. 5 in the region in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Talalenko was equally impressive as NSU's number two player with a record of 14-5 during the regular season. The freshman ranked as high as No. 25 nationally and No. 8 regionally in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Seven different Sunshine State Conference institutions were represented on the 2006 All-SSC Women's Tennis Team. In addition to the all-conference team, three major individual award winners in women's tennis were also recognized. Lynn University sophomore Victoria Weltz was named SSC Player of the Year, Mike Perez of Lynn University was named SSC Coach of the Year and Eckerd's Madora Mak was named SSC Freshman of the Year.

The No. 15 NSU women's tennis team (16-7) will face No. 13 Florida Gulf Coast University (12-5) this Friday in the opening round of the 2006 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at Lynn University's McCusker Sports Complex. The match will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the winner advancing to the second round and a meeting with either Lynn or Presbyterian College.
