NSU Holds 2006 Junior FBI Academy

More than a dozen high school students from Broward and Miami-Dade counties participated in the 2006 Junior FBI Academy at NSU June 19-24. The students attended workshops conducted by agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and went on fieldtrips to such locations as the Broward Sheriff’s Office Crime Laboratories, which sometimes processes and analyzes evidence for the FBI.

This is the second year NSU has held the academy. “The goal of the program is to bring students of diverse backgrounds together to learn from one another and to learn about diversity within the ranks of the FBI,” said Shanika Taylor, Ed.D., a professor at Fischler School of Education and Human Services and principal organizer.

The program received support from the FBI Citizen's Academy, which sponsored several students who were identified as high-risk, and the Retired Agents of the FBI. It is a collaboration between NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services and Criminal Justice Institute.

On Saturday, June 24, two students gave a presentation to parents and their peers on the topic, “Online Predators: How to Protect Yourself and Those You Love.” The students’ presentation was prepared during the academy.
