Law Center’s Dual Degree Programs Featured in Miami HeraldThe dual degree program with the University of Barcelona was highlighted in a front page story of the Miami Herald in December. Joseph Harbaugh, dean of the Shepard Broad law Center, is fast forwarding his vision to maximize the international needs of a global client based community, stating, “Law students today have to be prepared to be global lawyers. They have to be ready to practice law in different countries, cultures and languages. That person brings to the table knowledge and experience that can't be matched by a graduate with only a U.S. law degree. We are serving our local communities, but at the same time serving the legal needs of people around the world.” Writer Jerry Berrios of the Miami Herald explains the program as follows: “NSU Law students take traditional ground classes for three semesters, then spend a fourth semester in Barcelona, taking law courses in Spanish along with the university's students. They return to NSU for the third year, graduate, and take the bar exam. The fourth year is spent in Barcelona. The program is highly selective and requires fluent written and spoken Spanish. NSU Law has recently signed an agreement with the University of Venice Ca' Foscari for a similar program in Italian and is negotiating with Charles University in Prague. Future possibilities include the Caribbean, Turkey, Western Canada, Australia and South Africa.
