NSU OFFERS TIPS FOR STUDENTS ABOUT LIVING ON CAMPUS

FORT LAUDERDALE---Each fall, NSU's Office of Residential Life is preparing to welcome students back to campus as they move into the residence halls. In preparation for the event, NSU's Lua Hancock, Director of Residential Life, offers some tips below for making residential living a unique and memorable experience.

  • It is to the student's benefit to live on campus, as living on campus increases the overall happiness of the student. Recent studies show that students who live on campus are more likely to be involved and reach graduation. Residential students also report a higher satisfaction with their overall college experience.
  • Unity in diversity: Living on campus can provide a diverse environment, bringing various cultures together and presenting opportunities to learn new things and establish lifelong friendships.
  • Establish good communication between roommates. Although sometimes there can be initial anxiety regarding roommates, most roommates get along fine. Set up ground rules early.
  • Know the Rules. Become familiar with the hall policies. Some of the rules may seem steep, but they are established to ensure safety, an educational environment, and overall community satisfaction.
  • Be a Community Member. It's important to get to know your neighbors. Most residence halls have Resident Assistants (RA's), who facilitate various social programs within the residence hall.
  • Consider Leadership. Hall governments or RA positions can be a great way to hone in on leadership skills and can be a lot of fun as well.
  • Make Your Space Your Home. Decorate and surround yourself with things that make you happy and motivated.
  • Do not Take Your Time on Campus for Granted. Your college years will fly by and the real world will greet you before you know it. Now is the time to experience all that the overall social and educational collegiate experience has in store for you.
