Broward Alliance Announces World Class Faculty Award Winner
The Broward Alliance has named Dr. Mahmood Shivji as the recipient of its World Class Faculty Award. Dr. Shivji is Director of the Guy Harvey Research Institute and Professor of Marine Biology and Genetics at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center and Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to overseeing NSU’s Guy Harvey Research Institute, Dr. Shivji teaches Genetics in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Biology Program, and operates a research lab and mentors graduate students at the NSU’s Oceanographic Center. Dr. Shivji’s research, which is focused in the areas of marine conservation biology and biotechnology, has garnered worldwide attention for NSU and the Guy Harvey Research Institute. His work developing rapid DNA forensic methods to identify fish body parts is being used worldwide by U.S. and other national fisheries management agencies to reduce illegal fishing of threatened species.
The award, announced during The Broward Alliance's annual meeting on October 10, 2007 is presented as part of the “Educational Excellence Builds Business” campaign. The campaign was launched in 2006 by The Education-Workforce Development Committee of The Broward Alliance. It is designed to significantly enhance perceptions of business decision makers about the quality of Broward’s PreK-20 education system and tout the quality of Broward’s workforce. The campaign also provides collateral material on Broward’s public and private schools, its innovative programs and corporate partnerships, and online data and information such as Broward Advance Placement score trends to the business community through the Broward Alliance's website at www.browardalliance.org. Additionally, the campaign showcases South Florida’s “world-class” faculty and recognizes educators who are nationally or internationally known in their fields.
"One of our key drivers of economic success in Broward County is the quality of our workforce," said James P. Tarlton (JT), president and CEO of The Broward Alliance. "Having world-class faculty members in our local university system helps us develop the talent pool needed for the knowledge based jobs of the future as we work to strengthen and diversify our economy."
Past recipients of the award include Dr. Franklin Garcia-Godoy, professor and assistant dean for research at Nova Southeastern University's College of Dental Medicine; Dr. Larry Lemanski, Florida Atlantic University’s first vice president for research and professor of biomedical sciences, biology and chemistry; and Dr. Jon Volin, professor, researcher and the director of Florida Atlantic University’s Environmental Sciences Department.
