Fort Lauderdale – Davie, Fla. – The Sun-Sentinel honored Hui Fang Huang “Angie” Su, Ed.D., of Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services as recipient of the Community Services Shining Star. Su, one of five honorees selected from the tri-county area, was recognized at the Dec. 11 Sun-Sentinel Publisher’s Community Service Awards for developing innovative and inspiring volunteer projects.
Su, Professor of Mathematics Education at NSU, developed Project M.I.N.D. (Math is Not Difficult) in 1988. The K - 12 mathematics enhancement program was designed for academically at-risk students for the purpose of improving their ability to solve math problems. Since then, the project has evolved into a nationwide program and implemented in school districts throughout the country including schools in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Project MIND was a multi-million dollar project funded by the South Florida Annenberg Challenge, the Toppel Family Foundation, the Quantum Foundation, National Science Foundation, JM Family Enterprise, Inc., the School District of Palm Beach County, Broward County Public Schools, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties.
“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of all the volunteers who have worked with me through the years to make a difference for the citizens of the community,” said Su.
Su has also used her program to improve the lives of homeless women at the Broward Outreach Center through a similar project called Project W.I.N. (Women in Need). Earlier this year, her work with the homeless was featured on the Hallmark Channel’s New Morning Show.
Su has also received the governor’s prestigious Points of Light Award and was appointed by the governor to serve as a member of his Council on Homelessness in 2004. Recently, she was elected to serve as Chairperson for the state’s Council on Homelessness. One of the tasks she hopes to realize in this role is to implement some of the strategies from Project MIND for homeless education throughout the state. She was also nominated by the Broward Outreach Center for the State's Local Heroes Award. As a member of the Community Impact Team in Broward County, Su continues to volunteer her time and knowledge to help the citizens of Broward County.
In the spirit of giving, Dr. Su has chosen the Broward Outreach Center of Pompano Beach as the recipient organization for her Shining Star Award. In addition to the recognition, Su received a $2,500 grant that she is bestowing to the Center’s educational programs.
