More Than 7,000 Attend NSU’s Health Fair
Ft. Lauderdale (Davie), Fla. – More than 7,000 families and children attended Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) sixth annual “A Day For Children” health fair held on the main campus Sunday, Sept. 16.
The health fair featured free health screenings for vision, medical, speech, behavior, and dental health as well as physical and occupational therapy provided through NSU Health Care Centers. Many children have never been screened by health care professionals. As a result, pathology is frequently identified in many children for the first time followed by appropriate referral for further evaluation. In addition, faculty were available from NSU’s 10 clinical colleges and programs to answer health care questions from families.
NSU partnered this year with Kid Care of Broward County’s Public Health Department in registering 300 families into their programs providing health insurance to those children that qualified and over 400 referrals for call backs for further information.
The health fair was hosted by NSU Health Care Centers, Broward County's One Community Partnership, Broward Family Life, WPBT-Kid Vision, KISS FM, the Miniaci Theater, Blue Cross and Blue Shield and The North Broward Hospital District.
This year not only showcased the University’s clinical programs devoted to children, but also included the partners associated with Broward County’s One Community Partnership as well as other resource centers for children in Broward County. More than 100 booths representing different disciplines of the University and service centers for children in Broward County were available to provide health care screenings for children.
Over 300 students and faculty from NSU volunteered their time to provide fun activities for the children attending the health fair. Davie Police provided fingerprinting and ID cards, the Davie Fire Department provided free safety and installation demonstrations of child car seats, library cards for the Alvin Sherman Library were provided to children and their parents and the Epilepsy Foundation participated by giving away bicycle helmets.
This year’s event reached out to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, providing free transportation by NSU from their 13 centers as well as free transportation to and from the Broward Mall.
“It is the mission of “A Day for Children” to enhance the awareness of services in the community and the professional medical services offered by Nova Southeastern University for the health and well being of our children. Each year the event grows we are able to provide health care services to that many more children” said Event Chair Ronnie Oller, wife of Dr. Robert Oller, CEO of the Division of Clinical Operations at NSU.
