Dr. Larry A. Calderón to join Nova Southeastern University as
Vice President of Community and Government Affairs

FORT LAUDERDALE – Dr. Larry A Calderón will join Nova Southeastern University (NSU) as Vice President of Community and Governmental Affairs.  The announcement of Dr. Calderón’s appointment, a new position at the university, was made by NSU President Ray Ferrero, Jr., J.D.

“We are deeply honored and exceedingly pleased that Dr. Calderón has accepted this important new role at Nova Southeastern University,” said Ferrero.  “In his new role, Dr. Calderón, will coordinate NSU’s community collaborative efforts and outreach programs.”

“Collaboration is a hallmark of NSU and Dr. Calderón will continue to forge the partnerships with community colleges and other post-secondary institutions to complement and supplement our specific fields of study.  Strategically, these agreements will also provide a seamless transition to NSU undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.”

“As an institution of higher education we have always been recognized for the diversity of our students, faculty and staff,” Ferrero continued.  “The incorporation of Dr. Calderón, who has established himself as a community leader and role model, as well as a champion of diversity, will certainly enhance the academic environment we offer to our students.”

“I am extremely excited and honored to have the opportunity to be welcomed to a higher education institution of Nova Southeastern’s stature,” said Calderón. “It is a particularly compelling position because it will afford me the opportunity to continue to develop partnerships between such a distinguished institution as NSU and community colleges.”

“We promise our students a real world experience at NSU that includes interaction with community leaders in government, business, social services and the health professions,” Ferrero added.  “We also teach, by example, the value of giving back to the community.  Dr. Calderón is the consummate educator, administrator and civic leader, and will add a wealth of experience to our students’ learning process.”

Dr. Calderón is currently the President of Broward Community College.  Since moving to Florida, he has been a strong advocate for education, working closely with governmental entities in Tallahassee and Washington D.C. to increase program funding and opportunities for South Florida students.  He is also active in many community and professional organizations, including the Broward Alliance, Urban League of Broward County, Coordinating Council of Broward, the Broward Workshop, United Way of Broward County, and the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, among others.

Prior to coming to Florida, Dr. Calderón was President and District Vice Chancellor for Economic Development at Ventura College in California.  He also served for 10 years as Vice President of Oxnard College and six years as assistant dean for student services at Los Angeles City College.   He began his career as an elementary school teacher and then as an adjunct community college professor in the Ventura, California School District.

Dr. Calderón received a doctorate in higher and postsecondary education and a master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California (Los Angeles). His bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology is from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Dr. Calderón and his wife Lila live in Broward County.  They have a grown son and daughter who live in California.
