Race and Gender Equality Activist Anita Hill to Speak
at NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center
FORT LAUDERDALE – Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center will host Anita Hill, former confirmation hearings witness for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, as she takes center stage for the 10th Annual Lecture Series, 2006 Leo Goodwin Sr. Chair in Law, 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12. The event, which will be held in the Carl DeSantis Building on NSU’s main campus, is open to the public.
Hill will address this year’s theme, “Tilting the Scales: the Changing Roles of Women in the Law and Legal Practice,” which focuses on the impact of women on legal theory and the law in the 21st century.
Hill, whose biographical work, Speaking Truth to Power, chronicles her experience as witness in the confirmation hearings for then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, is also recognized for her riveting presentations on race and gender equality.
Currently on the faculty of the Heller Graduate School at Brandeis University, Massachusetts, as a professor of Social Policy, Law, and Women’s Studies, Hill is a recipient of the Fletcher Fellowship for her work on race and education.
She is the author of numerous articles on international commercial law, bankruptcy and civil rights, has an extensive resume including focuses on commercial law and civil rights. She has served as special counsel to the assistant secretary of the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights and as advisor to the chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Hill, a Yale Law School graduate, has an impressive teaching career as well that includes positions at Oral Roberts University, University of Oklahoma College of Law, as well as visits to University of California’s Institute for the Study of Social Change and Brandeis University Women’s Studies Program.
