MAILMAN SEGAL INSTITUTE OF TAMPA BAY AWARDED $1 MILLION
GRANT BY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL—Nova Southeastern University’s Mailman Segal Institute of Tampa Bay has been awarded a $1 million “Explosion of Literacy and Learning” (ELL) Grant from the Department of Education. The ELL program will transform four stable, high-functioning Early Childhood Centers serving 216 low-income children in Hillsborough County– many with limited English proficiency, disabilities or other special needs – into Centers of Excellence. Each Center of Excellence will focus on language, literacy, and cognitive development.

The Mailman Segal Institute of Tampa Bay oversees a network of excellent quality family childcare homes in the Sulphur Springs area of Tampa through a contract with the Hillsborough County Head Start program. The Institute also provides training and technical assistance to childcare centers in Hillsborough County through a grant from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County.

The Mailman Segal Institute of Tampa Bay is a unit of the Nova Southeastern University Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies. The center is located just off of interstate 75 in Tampa, FL, and is staffed by a group of innovative early childhood education professionals who are committed to improving the quality of child care and supporting families with young children. Most programs at the center are funded by grants, contracts and donations. Other programs are funded by tuition and scholarships.
