NSU Hosts International Conference on Matrix Analysis and Applications

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL— More than 70 of the finest minds in mathematics will be on the main campus of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) for the International Conference on Matrix Analysis and Applications, December 14-16, 2003. The three-day event will be held in Auditorium 2103 of the Health Professions Division, 3200 S. University Drive, Fort Lauderdale.

Co-sponsored by NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences and the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS), the conference will feature guest lecturer Roger Horn, research professor of math at the University of Utah and vice president of the ILAS. ILAS is the largest professional society in the fields of linear and multi-linear algebra, and matrix analysis. Horn, one of the most respected and renowned mathematicians in the field of matrix analysis, is the founder of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at John Hopkins University, where he worked for 20 years before relocating to Utah. He has served as editor of several prestigious math journals, including the American Mathematical Monthly. He is the author of several books and is the co-author of Matrix Analysis (vol. 1 & 2, 1985, 1991), that are both regarded as standard preferences for teaching and research.

The organizing committee for the conference includes:

  • Tsuyoshi Ando – Hokkaido University, Japan
  • Chi-Kwong Li – College of William and Mary, Willliamsburg, Virginia
  • George P.H. Styan – McGill University, Canada
  • Hugo Woerdeman – College of William and Mary, and Catholic University, Belgium
  • Fuzhen Zhang - Nova Southeastern University.

The goals of the conference are to stimulate research and interaction of researchers interested in all aspects of linear and multi-linear algebra, matrix analysis and applications, as well as to provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, recent results and developments on the subjects.
