Panel Discussion About Media Coverage Of The
War In Iraq To Bring Panel Of Experts To Nova Southeastern University
Panelists Include Experts In Ethics, Propaganda, Journalism, And National
Defense
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL— Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will
host a panel discussion on propaganda, journalistic ethics, and the
media coverage of the war in Iraq, entitled, "The Media: Hawk or
Dove?" at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, October 16, room 309 of the Mailman
Hollywood building on NSU’s main campus, 3301 College Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free, and open to all members of the community,
and media.
The Division of Humanities, NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and
Sciences and the South Florida chapter of the Society of Professional
Journalists are sponsoring the event.
Questions to be explored regarding the media coverage of the war in
Iraq include: Was the media embedded with the troops or just in bed
with the Administration? Now that the reality of war is settling in,
was the mainstream media too quick to trade access for objectivity?
Did showing the American people the first draft of history as it was
happening justify the compromises journalism outlets made to capture
it?
Darcie Lunsford, Editorial Board, South Florida Business Journal,
will moderate the discussion as experts in the areas of ethics, propaganda,
journalism, and national defense explore these and other issues. The
panel members include:
- Mike Kirsch, CBS 4, veteran war correspondent, who reported
on the Iraq war as a non-embedded journalist
- Tom Fiedler, editor of the Miami Herald
- John Dahlburg, L.A. Times reporter and veteran European, Asian
and African correspondent
- Ben Mulvey, Ph.D., ethics and philosophy professor, Director
of the Division of Humanities, Farquhar College of Arts & Sciences,
Nova Southeastern University
- Lt. Col. Dave Lapan, Department of Defense, involved in administration
of embedded journalists during the Iraq war, now stationed at Camp LeJeune,
N.C.
- Lisa Jeffery, adjunct instructor of communication at Nova Southeastern
University, propaganda expert and former U.S. Air Force Captain and
Public Affairs Officer during the Gulf War.
Light refreshments will be served. To RSVP, send email to reemj@nova.edu,
