NSU To Host Domestic Violence Awareness Fundraiser

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - In an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence, Nova Southeastern University’s Student Counseling Services, the Domestic Violence Institute (DVI), and the Feminist Alliance for Networking and Support (FANS) are sponsoring a Domestic Violence Outreach Fundraiser on Thursday, October 23, 2003. The event will be held from 7-9:00 p.m., on NSU’s main campus in the Flight Deck of Rosenthal Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. Donations, which will support the work of the Domestic Violence Institute, will be accepted at the door.

The program will include general information about domestic violence by NSU professor and DVI founder/ executive director, Lenore Walker, Ed.D., author of The Battered Women. The evening will also feature poetry reading by a local group, "Those Two Guys," who recite poetry about the harmful effects of domestic violence and child abuse.

Therapists will be available to provide psycho-educational programming regarding domestic violence, and representatives from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office will speak about the legal options for victims of domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence Institute, a non-profit, public (501c3) agency, seeks to educate and train professionals and lay people, conduct research, and impact public policy about violence against women, children, men, the elderly and promote survival of the non-abusive family.
