University School 5th Graders To Learn About The Finer, And More Nutritional, Things In Life With “Days Of Taste”

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – 5th Grade students at the University School of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will celebrate Nutrition Week by participating in Julia Child’s “Days of Taste” program on Nov. 5. Chef Michael Moran, a culinary professor at Florida International University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and chairman of the South Florida chapter of the American Institute of Wine and Food (AIWF), will serve as guest lecturer for the program, and will conduct demonstrations for students during two sessions in efforts to teach them a lifelong appreciation of food and its nutritional values.

“ Days of Taste” is an outreach program for 4th and 5th grade students dedicated to teaching them about food and its journey through daily life -- from its genesis on the farm, to being served at the table. The program is funded by AIWF, which was founded by Julia Child, national spokesperson for “Days of Taste,” and Robert Mondavi. The AIWF is dedicated to understanding and celebrating the pleasures, benefits and traditions of the table, and works toward the following objectives:

  • To build a food and nutrition vocabulary
  • To understand that locally grown foods are freshest
  • To experience and compare tastes
  • To develop “taste memories”
  • To provide social food experiences around the table

University School of NSU’s “Days of Taste” program will be presented during two sessions -- 9:15-10:15 a.m., and 10:30-11:30 a.m. – at the Lower School on NSU’s Main Campus. For more information, contact Hillary Gurman at (954) 262-4446.

University School of Nova Southeastern University is a private pre-kindergarten through 12th grade college preparatory school located on NSU’s main campus in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The school was founded in 1971 as a university-based laboratory school, and has grown into one of the largest, most successful independent college preparatory schools in Florida.
