Prayer in America Opens Dialogue Among Interfaith Leaders at Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center

What role has prayer played in shaping the development and history of America?

This compelling question will be the topic of dialogue among interfaith leaders, students, and members of the South Florida community on September 6. Hosted at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, the forum titled Prayer In America will screen a two-part documentary of the same title that was inspired by and companion to the book One Nation Under God: The History of Prayer in America (Doubleday, 2005) by James P. Moore, Jr.

An opening reception beginning at 6 p.m., followed by the screening and panel discourse from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. is set to take place in the 3rd floor gallery of the library (3100 Ray Ferrero Boulevard). Seating is limited. To RSVP please email mkemp@wlrn.org or call Mary Kemp at 786-275-0803.

The documentary Prayer In America is scheduled to air in November 2007 in high-definition on WLRN public television, explores contemporary debates about the role of prayer through the lens of history. By asking rhetorically, “How did we get here?” the documentary examines the ways in which prayer has contributed to and continues to shape the American experience.

Prayer In America, is part of a national outreach campaign serving as a catalyst to join people of all faiths in interfaith dialogue. The emphasis will be on ecumenical discussion - respectful of the unique contributions different religious groups have made to the shaping of the religious history of the United States.

Like the production, the campaign will be multi-faith and inclusive - offering a broad-based approach that will appeal across interfaith lines.
