Nova Southeastern University to Train Westside Regional Medical Center Doctors
for the Aftermath of Terrorist Attacks and other Public Health Emergencies
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. ---- Nova Southeastern University will train Westside Regional Medical Center doctors on Saturday to prepare them for public-health emergencies resulting from terrorist attacks and other disasters.
The event will take place on Sept. 15 at Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation. Physicians there will be trained by faculty from Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Center for Bioterrorism and All-Hazards Preparedness (CBAP). The 9 a.m. training is being done in September because it’s National Preparedness Month.
The course will prepare Westside’s doctors to respond to public health emergencies resulting from bioterrorism, other manmade intentional disasters, non-intentional manmade disasters, natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and wildfires, as well as pandemic flu.
“It is essential for health professionals and others who are part of the nation’s healthcare system to receive training in public-health preparedness, so that they can use their professional knowledge and skills as part of the interdisciplinary team needed to respond to major disasters,” said Leonard A. Levy, D.P.M., M.P.H., CBAP’s director.
CBAP, which receives federal funding from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, provides health professionals and emergency responders with a series of discussions and workshops that meet Department of Homeland Security guidelines.
CBAP has been providing education and training to healthcare providers and first responders since Sept. 11, 2001. Since May 2006, more than 14,500 people across the country have been trained by CBAP, through a combination of face-to-face and online instruction. CBAP is one of only seven federally funded national training centers.
