NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies Announces
2005-2006 Scholarship Recipients

FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE—Nova Southeastern University’s Center for Psychological Studies announced the recipients of its 2005-2006 scholarships.

Scholarship awards were given to students pursuing master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology, school psychology and counseling, and who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to their professions.

“We are very proud of our students, as they will dedicate their careers to serving the mental health needs of our diverse communities,” said Dean Karen Grosby. “Their training programs are rigorous, and we look for all opportunities to support them as they strive for success, especially where there is financial need.”

The largest award was $4,457 from the Doris Zachary Memorial Scholarship Fund. Barbara and Michael Zachary created the scholarship to honor their mother, Doris, who received her master’s degree in mental health counseling from NSU in 1978. The award was created for a single custodial parent currently enrolled in the master’s program in mental health counseling.

This year’s recipient was Mabel Thackeray, a single mother of three. Thackeray earned a license in clinical psychology from El Salvador’s University Jose Matias Delgado in 2003, and completed clinical residencies at a mental hospital and the Women’s National Prison in San Salvador.

Thackeray currently works full-time as a team leader at ARC Broward, where she supervises life skills programs and individual support services for adults with mental and physical disabilities. She is also a volunteer for the Broward Autism Society.
