Inaugural NSU ‘Shark Shuffle’ 5k run to raise scholarship dollars

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE—About 400 runners and walkers from Broward County will converge upon Nova Southeaster University on Sunday, Sept. 24 for the school’s first-ever Shark Shuffle, a 5K run/walk designed to promote health and wellness and to raise scholarship money for health-conscious students.

Sponsored by NSU’s Wellness Committee, a university-wide group devoted to the wellbeing of the NSU community, the inaugural Shark Shuffle is part of the committee’s newly implemented “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” Initiative. The event, which begins at 7:30 a.m. on Ray Fererro Jr. Boulevard, is open to the public.

"The Shark Shuffle will serve as our kick-off event for the year,” said Douglas Flemons, a member of the Wellness Committee and Director of Student Counseling Services. “It's a way of encouraging the integration of physical fitness and academic achievement."

NSU students, along with faculty and staff members and their immediate family members can register to participate in the Shark Shuffle for $12. Community members who register prior to the race will pay $20, and registration is $25 for those who register on the day of the shuffle. All persons interested in running or walking can register on line, by mail, or in person.

Free food, drinks and complimentary t-shirts will be available to all Shark Shuffle participants on the day of the event. Modest cash prizes for the three fastest male and female runners will be awarded, in addition to, trophies given to participants from several age categories. Also, $500 Dean’s scholarships will be raffled to selected NSU students who complete the 5K course.

Registered participants are also welcome to attend the Shark Shuffle Expo on Saturday, September 23, in the University Center, to pick up their race packets, tour the fitness facility, and visit sponsor tables to receive free giveaways. Health experts will be offering educational classes on biomechanics, gait training, injury prevention and race safety, sustainable exercise programs, and strength training to prepare participants for the 5K challenge.
