Inaugural NSU ‘Shark Shuffle’ 5k
run to raise scholarship dollars
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE—About 400 runners and walkers from Broward
County will converge upon Nova Southeaster University on Sunday, Sept.
24 for the school’s first-ever Shark Shuffle, a 5K run/walk designed
to promote health and wellness and to raise scholarship money for health-conscious
students.
Sponsored by NSU’s Wellness Committee, a university-wide group
devoted to the wellbeing of the NSU community, the inaugural Shark Shuffle
is part of the committee’s newly implemented “Healthy Body,
Healthy Mind” Initiative. The event, which begins at 7:30 a.m.
on Ray Fererro Jr. Boulevard, is open to the public.
"The Shark Shuffle will serve as our kick-off event for the year,” said
Douglas Flemons, a member of the Wellness Committee and Director of Student
Counseling Services. “It's a way of encouraging the integration
of physical fitness and academic achievement."
NSU students, along with faculty and staff members and their immediate
family members can register to participate in the Shark Shuffle for $12.
Community members who register prior to the race will pay $20, and registration
is $25 for those who register on the day of the shuffle. All persons
interested in running or walking can register on line, by mail, or in
person.
Free food, drinks and complimentary t-shirts will be available to all
Shark Shuffle participants on the day of the event. Modest cash prizes
for the three fastest male and female runners will be awarded, in addition
to, trophies given to participants from several age categories. Also,
$500 Dean’s scholarships will be raffled to selected NSU students
who complete the 5K course.
Registered participants are also welcome to attend the Shark Shuffle
Expo on Saturday, September 23, in the University Center, to pick up
their race packets, tour the fitness facility, and visit sponsor tables
to receive free giveaways. Health experts will be offering educational
classes on biomechanics, gait training, injury prevention and race safety,
sustainable exercise programs, and strength training to prepare participants
for the 5K challenge.
