Shepard Broad Law Center at NSU to Host Goodwin Lecture Series
Distinguished Experts to Address, “Trade Winds in Caribbean Law: Evolution of Legal Norms and Quest for Independent Justice”

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL. -The Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova Southeastern University will host the 2004 Goodwin Symposium, which will feature five distinguished experts in the field of Caribbean law. This year's theme, “Trade Winds in Caribbean Law: Evolution of Legal Norms and Quest for Independent Justice,” will address emerging legal trends in the Caribbean region and an exploration of the ongoing legal reform and change within the region.

The series will be held at the Shepard Broad Law Center on NSU's main campus, 3301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale.

The following dignitaries are scheduled to visit the law school as visiting Goodwin professors and scholars:

  • September 26 -October 2: Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, Director of the Master of Law Program at the University of the West Indies and a Senior Lecturer in Law. The community is invited to attend the Public Session on Tuesday, September 28, from 5-8:00 p.m. in the Faculty Study.


  • October 7 : The Honorable Kenny Anthony, Prime Minister of St. Lucia . The community is invited to attend the Public Session on Thursday, October 7, from 5-8:00 p.m. in the Faculty Study.


  • October 8 : The Honorable Mia Amor Motley, Q.C., M.P. , Deputy Prime Minister, Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Barbados . The community is invited to attend the Public Session on Friday, October 8 , from 5-8:00 p.m. in the Faculty Study.


  • October 13 -15: The Honorable Sir David A.C. Simmons, K.A., A.C.H. , Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Barbados . The community is invited to attend the Public Session on Wednesday, October 13, from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Faculty Study.


  • November 15-19 : C. Dennis Morrison, Q.C., Partner, DunnCox Law Firm, Kingston, Jamaica. The community is invited to attend the Public Session on Thursday, November 18, from 5-8:00 p.m. in the Faculty Study.

NSU Law professor Jane Cross will chair the Goodwin lectures.

The series will seek to address contemporary national, regional, and international concerns by advancing Caribbean law and legal institutions. These include historical undertakings such as the inauguration of the Caribbean Court of Justice in November 2004 and the establishment of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy.

The Leo Goodwin Sr. Chair in Law Symposium is dedicated to the memory of Leo Goodwin Sr., an entrepreneur and visionary who was committed to the advancement of education and research, and a generous benefactor of the Law Center . NSU Law thanks the Goodwin Foundation for its continuing support of an annual in-depth discussion of a cutting edge legal topic.
