NSU Ranked the Top Producer of African American and Hispanic Doctorates
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL—Nova Southeastern University is once again the number one producer of African American* doctorates among both traditionally white institutions and historically Black colleges and universities, as well as the number one producer of Hispanic doctorates based on survey results published in the July 29, 2004 edition of Black Issues in Higher Education.
NSU has held first place nationally in the number of doctorates awarded to blacks for the last seven consecutive years.
NSU also ranked as the number one producer
of:
- African-American doctorates in the discipline of education
- Hispanic
doctorates in the discipline of education
- Hispanic doctorates in
the discipline of business, management, marketing and related support
services
- Total minority doctorates in the discipline of education
- Total minority doctorates in the discipline of business, management, marketing and related support services
In ranking number one, NSU awarded a total of 115 doctorate degrees to African Americans (all disciplines combined), and 57 doctorate degrees to Hispanics (all disciplines combined). Argosy University – Sarasota, Florida Campus ranked second with 86 doctorate degrees awarded to African Americans, while the University of California-Los Angeles ranked second with 36 doctorate degrees awarded to Hispanics.
In the 2002-03 academic year, there were 2,361 doctorates conferred to African Americans, and 1,457 doctorates conferred to Hispanics nationwide.
NSU ranked as the No. 2 producer of Asian American, and African American doctorates in the discipline of business, management, marketing and related support services.
The data, which comes from the U.S. Department of Education, was collected through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) program completers survey conducted by the Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The data is based on degrees conferred between July 1, 2002 and July 30, 2003.
NSU also ranked as the No. 3 producer of Hispanic first professional** degrees in dentistry, and the No. 3 producer of total minority doctorate degrees in computer and information sciences/support services. In breaking new ground, NSU ranked as the No. 4 producer of Asian American doctorates in psychology.
In the master’s degree category, NSU ranked third in four categories. The university was the No. 3 producer of:
- Hispanic master’s degrees – all disciplines combined
- Hispanic master’s degrees in the discipline of business, management, marketing and related support services
- Hispanic master’s degrees in the discipline of psychology
- African American master’s degrees in education.
Minorities represented 43 percent of NSU’s total enrollment during fall 2002, and the number of minority students increased 78 percent between 1998 and 2002. Between 1998 and 2002, the number of minority students in graduate students increased by two-fold, and in professional-degree programs by 38 percent. The university’s racial/ethnic distribution for 2002-03 in graduate and first professional degree programs was:
- 51% White, Non-Hispanic
- 26% African American
- 24 % Hispanic
- 10 % Nonresident Alien
- 6% Unknown
- 3% Other Minority***
