FORT LAUDERDALE , FL – BellSouth Foundation has announced plans to award a $45,000 grant to Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to support a series of free workshops for teachers offered through Teacher Universe TM (TU) at the Fischler School of Education and Human Services.
The workshops will be customized to fit the individual needs of schools and school districts. The result is students who are more engaged in their own learning and using technology as a way to enhance their daily educational experiences.
BellSouth Foundation will present the grant at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 in the Teacher Store at the Fischler School of Education and Human Services in North Miami Beach.
Teacher Universe is an international clearinghouse of educational resources that provides comprehensive professional development opportunities to improve teacher education and student achievement. The BellSouth grant money will be used to train teachers in the use of state-of-the-art technology that is seamlessly integrated into the K-12 curriculum. Collaboration among teachers and students is also a part of the program as students give input on how technology can better be used to facilitate their learning experiences.
“BellSouth's continued support of education in Florida is a terrific match for the Fischler School's dedication to improving the ability of teachers to provide the best possible for children,” said Nova Southeastern University Education Provost and Dean H. Wells Singleton, Ph.D. “The results of this grant will better prepare professionals to develop strategies for integrating technology into classroom instruction.”
“The BellSouth Foundation continues to seek grant making that promotes excellence,” said Joseph P. Lacher, president of BellSouth/Florida. “This initiative strengthens teaching quality and brings innovative learning opportunities to the students across our state.”
Since 2001, the Foundation has awarded 29 Opportunity Grants totaling $1.6 million dollars. This year, the Foundation will award $496,000 in opportunity grants throughout the southeastern United States .
