Summer Activities Wrap Up in August at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center

FORT LAUDERDALE , FL - Children and families will get the chance to enjoy the dwindling days of summer during August at Nova Southeastern University 's Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center , a joint-use facility with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners.

Residents of all ages have a variety of programs from which to choose.

Programs for Children:

  • Monday, August 2: Folklore & Fun, 2:00-2:45 p.m., with local children's author and songwriter Darrell House, who will perform songs and read from his new book, “Miller the Caterpillar.”


  • Tuesday, August 3 : Souvenir Shop Craft for ages 8-12, 2:00-3:00 p.m.


  • Tuesday, August 3: Bilingual Family Storytime (Cuentos Para La Familia): Stories and Songs in English and Spanish, all ages, 7:00-7:30 p.m.

  • Wednesday, August 4: Sunshine Stories with Ronald McDonald Live! Ages 3 and up, 10:00-10:30 a.m.,


  • Wednesday, August 4: Software Storytime, Ages 3 and up, 10:30-11:00 a.m. Self directed opportunity for child and caregiver to explore games, websites and learn new technologies.


  • Thursday, August 5: Writers' Institute Grand Finale – public reading and reception for all ages, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Children will share the writings they created during the weekly workshops. Light refreshments will be served.


  • Fridays, August 6 : Florida Freeplay: a One-on-One Play Experience, ages 6-35 months with adult, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Limited weekly enrollment, pre-registration begins Sunday of each program week (954) 262-5477.


  • Saturday, August 7: Super Saturday: The Alligator Conjure Man Show features exciting live show with storytelling, singing and vaudeville humor. All ages, 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Adult Programs

  • Tuesday, August 24:  Internet Training, 2-4:00 p.m., and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Pre-registration required for each session. Sponsored by the Broward Regional Hadassah. This program will introduce participants to basic Internet searching techniques and navigation.


  • Tuesday, August 26: Books Over Biscotti: Adult book discussion. This week's book, “Now is the Time to Open Your Heart,” by Alice Walker. 7-9:00 p.m. Light refreshments.


  • Friday, August 27: Hannah Kahn Foundation Poets' Night, 7-9:00 p.m. at the Connections Café. Local and regional poets share their work in an informal atmosphere.

Book Display: 100 Stories for 100 Years, Happy Birthday Issac Bashevis Singer!

The Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center is a joint-use facility with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners . Free card membership allows patrons access to public library collections as well as exclusive university academic resources. The library is located at 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd. , Fort Lauderdale .
