NSU’s Institute For Learning In Retirement To Host Open House
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Last month, when Freshman Orientation ended,
Nova Southeastern University (NSU) students grabbed their books and
laptops, and headed for class. Then, their parents and grandparents
went home to resume their daily lives in the workplace and in leisure
activities.
Well, not exactly – not for a growing number of active adults,
retired or otherwise. They are headed for the Open House at the Institute
for Learning in Retirement (ILR), part of Nova Southeastern University.
The ILR, founded to meet the lifelong learning needs of the growing
retirement community in South Florida, has served its membership for
more than a quarter of a century on the Nova Southeastern University
main campus in Davie.
The ILR is a place where “we exercise our hearts, our minds and
our souls.” Our membership of older adults attends an extensive
program of lectures, workshops, discussion groups, and field trips.
Members take advantage of renowned NSU faculty, exciting peer leaders,
and prominent visiting experts in such fields as humanities, sciences,
health, and government.
Learning opportunities at the ILR fulfill many needs of our members
after they have retired, providing a welcoming social environment, intellectual
challenge and stimulation, entertainment, and companionship. This evolving,
year-round program promotes member self-governance to create a broad
curriculum of in-class and field trip events.
At the OPEN HOUSE on Monday, September 29th, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM,
you can continue your own journey on the path of lifelong learning,
with ILR membership. All you need to do is call us at 954-262-8472,
or email us at ilr@nova.edu for further
information on ILR programs, schedules, and unique learning opportunities.
ILR members eagerly await the start of classes on Wednesday, October
1st, when they will learn with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John
deGroot, philosopher Valerie Pelligrini, Judge Ronald Rothschild, and
NSU Professor Suzanne Ferriss in the first week.
Throughout the year to come, the ILR will be people coming together
for a short story discussion group; for a Great Books discussion; for
a writing workshop; for the Great Decisions study group of foreign policy
issues; for a series in topics of American History, such as on Race
and Ethnicity; for a short series in French Art and in world literature;
for timely updates on legal, health, educational and environmental issues;
for opera and jazz and the world economy; and, for exercising the heart,
the mind, and the soul.
ILR is located at NSU’s University Park Plaza North, 3424 University
Drive in Davie. To learn more about the OPEN HOUSE and the many programs
offered by ILR contact Ed Aqua at 954-262-8472.
