Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale to Hold April 18th Student Scholarship Competition for Creative Summer Art Academy
Open to Grades 1-12
Scholarships Based on Merit and Need

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, a division of Nova Southeastern University, is encouraging budding artists to attend its 2009 Creative Summer Art Academy (CSAA) by holding a merit scholarship competition. The competition, open to students entering grades 1-12 and interested in the Creative Summer Art Academy, will take place on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Museum’s Studio School Annex.

Check-in, as well as a meet and speak with staff and fine art instructors, will be held from 8:15-9:00 a.m. Participants will be separated into grade groups 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12, and will then have up to two hours to create one drawing during the competition. While students are engaged in the competition, parents are invited to enjoy complimentary refreshments in the Museum Café and a docent-led tour at 10 a.m. (parents will not have access to the Studio School Annex during the competition).

Funds for the merit and need-based scholarships were raised in part during the Museum’s National Art Festival held in January 2009. In 2008, scholarships were awarded to more than 75 of 200 applicants interested in the arts. Winners will be notified within two weeks of this year’s competition.

All competitors will receive either a 10% discount or awarded scholarship, applicable to all camp registrations received on this day.

Additional instructor-recommended scholarships are awarded throughout the five, 2-week camp sessions based on merit and class performance. Running from June 8-August 14, Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., CSAA offers students focused instruction by local, professional fine art instructors. Many past high school attendees have gone on to receive coveted scholarships and awards and attend prestigious art schools around the US.

Camp instruction is based on the following:
Grades 1-4:
Painting, drawing, and design are explored using a variety of materials, with an emphasis on creativity, exploration, art vocabulary, and experimentation.

Grades 5-8:
Subjects covered include design, painting and drawing. Workshops build on the elements of composition, vocabulary, creativity, and the overall process involved with creating a work of art. Set Design will be included in the curriculum during sessions III & IV in conjunction with Musical Theatre Production class.

Grades 9-12:
Students will be introduced to Anatomy & Structure (study and analysis of the skeleton and muscular structure of the human figure) using a variety of live models and reference to the skeleton. Students will learn proportions of the human skeleton, as well as individual muscle identification. Students will draw and paint from models performing dynamic gestural poses and extended poses. Instructors encourage the development of the student’s technical drawing skills and ultimately their creative expression.

The cost of CSAA is $350 per session for Museum members (Reciprocal level or higher) and $400 for non-members. Multiple session and child discounts are available. In addition to session costs, morning care is available for $50 per session; afternoon care is offered at $100 per session. Both morning and after care are available for $125 per session, in addition to the session costs. Those who register before April 15th will receive a 10% early registration discount. ABOUT THE MUSEUM OF ART | FORT LAUDERDALE
The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale , a division of Nova Southeastern University, is open daily 11 am -5 pm with extended hours on Thursdays until 8 pm.
