Nova Southeastern University Hosts “A Continent of Cultural Treasures” Art Exhibit In Celebration of Black History Month

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. - Local collectors of African art and artifacts have joined with Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to celebrate the rich heritage of Africa with an engaging art exhibit themed “A Continent of Cultural Treasures.”
 
On display Feb. 8 through Mar. 23 are more than 100 items including African masks, baskets, musical instruments, prints, paintings, stools, dolls, jewelry, kente looms and cloths, which will be showcased in the second floor gallery of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center.

A Continent of Cultural Treasures” is part of the university’s Fifth Annual African Presence 2008 Art Exhibition and Black History Month celebrations which include a month long calendar of compelling discussions, engaging dance performances, educational workshops, award winning film screenings and dynamic speakers.

An invitation-only private reception will kick off the exhibit with a live performance by the critically acclaimed professional company Step Afrika and a ceremonial presentation of African chiefs that will be held 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7.

A Continent of Cultural Treasures” is sponsored by NSU’s Office of University Relations, Fischler School of Education and Human Services Office of Community Education and Diversity Affairs.
