Nova Southeastern University’s
Lifelong Learning Institute Keeps Holocaust Memories Alive
Davie, FL - In March, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) will host two new authors presenting their memoirs on experiencing and overcoming the traumas of war. The lectures will present two very different aspects of survival from the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust.
March 8: 12:30–2:00PM
Sam Lato will present From Ghetto to Guerilla:
In From Ghetto to Guerilla, Sam Lato describes his tumultuous life in Baronovich, Poland, throughout the Nazi occupation. Baronovich was part of Soviet Poland, until the German invasion of Russia. Lato soon joined the Jewish partisans, a group of 20,000–30,000 members who fought back against the Nazis. The partisans were responsible for blowing up thousands of armored convoys and thwarting the Nazi war machine in countless ways. Lato met his future wife, Genia, in the partisans, and they later conducted missions together. Following liberation by the Russians, Lato joined the Red Army in their advance to the Baltic Sea. After the war, Lato and his wife lived for several years in Russia, but eventually they defected and fled to West Germany. Lato now lives in the United States.
March 21: 10:00-11:30AM
A heartfelt discussion with author Aina Segal about the psychological effects of war:
In Battered Heart, Aina Segal depicts her journey of fleeing Latvia with her parents as a little girl. While Latvia was an independent democracy following World War I, it quickly became a focal point of fighting between Germans and Russians in World War II, due to its link to the Baltic Sea. In an attempt to retreat from the war’s front, her family joined millions of refugees in escaping to Germany. In Battered Heart, Segal examines her fractured sense of self, resulting from the nomadic life of a refugee. She analyzes her feelings of survivor's guilt and describes her later conversion to Judaism and the loss of her child.
The lectures are free and open to the public. RSVP by contacting (954) 262-8471.
