NSU Theatre Closes Season with Story of Cuban Repression
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE , FL -- Nova Southeastern University’s Theatre
Program closes its inaugural season with a controversial Cuban tale of
parricide, revenge and revolution. Night of the Assassins, by
famed Cuban playwright José Triana will run April 7 and 8 at 7:30
p.m. in the 2nd floor auditorium of the Mailman-Hollywood Building on
NSU’s main campus. Admission is free.
Night of the Assassins was originally written in Cuba in 1964,
and was subsequently banned there for 30 years. Three siblings perform
a ritualistic murder of their parents in this complex study of a revolutionary
family. The play will be performed in English.
Triana was one of the most influential Cuban playwrights during the
early years of the Cuban Revolution. Recognizing that he could not function
as a playwright in Castro's Cuba Triana left the island in 1980 for self-imposed
exile in Paris where he has lived ever since. Night of the Assassins is
Triana's most influential play, and one of the most frequently produced
Spanish-language dramas.
NSU’s Theatre Program is housed in the Farquhar College of Arts
and Sciences Division of Humanities. The 2005-2006 season also featured
productions of The Burial at Thebes and Nickel and Dimed:
On (Not) Getting By in America.
