Sherman Library Exhibit Features
Posters and Images of the Northern Ireland Conflict
"Troubled Images: Posters and Images of
the Northern Ireland Conflict" will be on display Feb. 5 through
March 20 at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology
Center. Nova Southeastern University is just one of nine stops on a tour
that takes the renowned exhibit across the United States and Canada.
The Linen Hall Library in Belfast assembled
Troubled Images, which chronicles the lines of conflict between the ruling
British government, Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants in Northern
Ireland.
Throughout the six-week period, powerful public
lectures on the history of the conflict in Northern Ireland will be presented.
Distinguished speakers will include noted Irish authors Patricia Reilly
Giff and Susan Bartolotti, who will present their program “Ireland
for Kids,” on March 9 and Don Mullan, writer and director of the
movie “Bloody Sunday.”
“One of the purposes of this exhibit is
to examine parallels between the Northern Irish and various conflicted
communities here and abroad, including Haitian Americans, Cuban Americans,
the Jewish and Arab communities, and others,” said James E. Doan,
Ph.D., a professor of humanities at NSU and president of the South Florida
Irish Studies Consortium, Inc.
Doan, with a panel of distinguished scholars,
will open the Troubled Images Exhibit at 1 p.m. with a symposium titled, “Troubled
Images: Dramatic and Visual Representations of the Northern Irish Conflict
and Peace Process.”
Posters of the Northern Ireland Conflict from
The Linen Hall Library are presented in North America in collaboration
with Meridian International Center in Washington, DC. They are being
presented at NSU with support from BankAtlantic.
A reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. and feature
Yvonne Murphy of the Linen Hall Library of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Troubled Images represent a wide range of opinions
on major events and individuals involved in the arduous years of struggle
and the burgeoning peace process, in which the United States Government,
under the Clinton Administration, played a significant role in brokering
the Good Friday agreement.
