A ‘Feast’ for the Eyes: National Best Selling Authors Gather at NSU to Promote Literacy in Broward County
Literary Feast 2005 Boasts Authors McCourt, Connelly, Black

FORT LAUDERDALE- DAVIE- What do best-selling authors Michael Connelly, Malachy McCourt, and Edwin Black have in common with Nova Southeastern University? They’re all returning this year to Literary Feast 2005, the annual celebration of books and authors, to be held on March 11-12 at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center on NSU’s main campus.

Connelly, author of The Narrows, the latest in the Harry Bosch detective series, and a Fort Lauderdale native, spoke at Literary Feast in 1996 and 2000. Malachy McCourt, the author of A Monk Swimming, participated in the event in 2001. And NSU is returning as title sponsor of the event for the fourth consecutive year. Joining these Literary Feast veterans is newcomer Black, whose latest release Banking on Baghdad is a New York Times bestseller.

“ Nova Southeastern University is honored to once again host this annual event, which will be the culmination of Literary Feast 2005,” said NSU President Ray Ferrero, Jr. “The finest in literature coming here to help us promote literacy provides an excellent opportunity to support two worthwhile organizations that are so important to the community.”

This year, the Sun-Sentinel/WB39 Children's Fund is joining the Broward Public Library Foundation as beneficiaries of the event, which is coordinated by Byblos, the special events, fund-raising committee of the Library Foundation.

Byblos member Danielle Yoldas, of Fort Lauderdale, serves as Literary Feast Chair. "We are so pleased that the dollars raised at this wonderful event will support literacy and children's programs for both the Library Foundation and the Children's Fund. It makes all the work done by our extraordinary volunteer committee so worthwhile."

Popular for its three distinct events, Literary Feast 2005 is one of South Florida's premier literary events of the season and offers book enthusiasts a unique mix of literary, social and educational elements. Featuring 19 authors, including Mimi Sheraton, former New York Times food critic and author of Eating My Words, and author Lorenzo Carcaterra of Paradise City and Sleepers, Literary Feast 2005 promises to be a stimulating event for literary fans of all ages.

The weekend-long Literary Feast 2005 includes the following events:

  • Novel Day for Students on Friday, March 11, allows more than 3,500 local high school students to come together with participating authors for a first-hand glimpse of what life is like as an author.
  • Night of Literary Feasts, also on Friday, March 11, is a fund-raising event where guests dine with their favorite authors in elegant homes, clubs and restaurants around the county for a night of stimulating conversation and exquisite food. The evening begins with a cocktail reception, featuring book signings and a silent auction, at the Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
  • Day of Literary Lectures on Saturday, March 12, is a free daylong series of panel discussions, lectures and book signings, held at NSU's Alvin Sherman Library.
