Ambassador Paul Bremer to Speak at NSU on February 17
Campus Lectures and Panels to Focus on Iraq War and War on Terrorism
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL—Nova Southeastern University's
Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host its Annual Distinguished
Speakers Series on February 17 with Ambassador L. Paul Bremer, III ,
the former Presidential Envoy to Iraq. Ambassador Bremer's presentation, “ Iraq
and the War on Terrorism," will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Miniaci
Performing Arts Center on NSU's main campus. The event is free and open
to the public.
Ambassador L. Paul Bremer, III was named Presidential
Envoy to Iraq in 2003 and in that capacity he served as the Administrator
of the Coalition Provisional Authority and spearheaded the coalition
in building the new framework of Iraq .
During his 23-year State Department career, Ambassador
Bremer served as Special Assistant or Executive Assistant to six Secretaries
of State. As one of the world's leading experts on crisis management,
terrorism and homeland security, Bremer served on the National Academy
of Science Commission examining the role of Science and technology in
countering terrorism and chaired a Heritage Foundation study, “Defending
the Homeland”. In September 1999, the Speaker of the House of Representatives,
Dennis Hastert, appointed him Chairman of the National Commission on
Terrorism, and in June 2002, President Bush appointed Ambassador Bremer
to the President's Homeland Security Advisory Council.
As part of a week-long series of activities leading
up to Ambassador Bremer's presentation, the Farquhar College of Arts
and Sciences will offer three related lectures and panels. Each of these
free events will run 7:00–9:00 p.m. in the 2 nd Floor Auditorium
of the Mailman Hollywood Building:
- Monday, February 14, a faculty panel from
the Division of Humanities will present, “What Saves
Us: Poetry, Poets, and War,” that will explore poems
written about war, and the public and sometimes controversial role
that poetry and poets have played in response to 9/11 and the Iraq
War.
- Tuesday, February 15, student presentations
will be presented on biological warfare and a faculty panel from the
Division of Math, Science and Technology will discuss, “Forensic
Science, Biometric Security, and Cyber Terrorism,” that
will focus on technology-related aspects of the Iraq War and the War
on Terrorism.
- Wednesday February 16, faculty members from
the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences will discuss, “Aggression
and the Effects of Terror,” which will examine the
personal and societal changes that directly result from terrorist attacks
and from continued threats of terror in the United States .
