NSU Students To Tear Down 'Wall Of Hate' During Unity Week

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The students, staff, and faculty of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will aim to promote peace and oneness during the upcoming Unity Week, Jan. 19-23. In fact, as part of this year's campus-wide celebration, students will literally tear down barriers of hate and prejudice by constructing a symbolic brick Wall of Hate" and then bringing it down at the end of the week.

Students will start Unity Week by volunteering at Martin Luther King parades on Monday, Jan. 19 and holding public readings of King's famous I Have a Dream Speech" on Tuesday, Jan. 20, just outside the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Technology Information Center on NSU's main campus.

Other highlights of Unity Week will include:

  • A candlelight vigil to raise awareness about eating disorders at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in front of Rosenthal Hall on the main campus
  • A Teach-In on Homophobia with professors, community members, and students, at Noon on Wednesday, Jan. 21, on the main campus.
  • Interfaith Dialogues, a panel discussion in which members of different religions discuss their traditions and beliefs, and answer questions, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the Flight Deck on the main campus.
  • The Cultural Taste of NSU, an event that showcases the food, music, and traditions of various cultures, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in front of the Alvin Sherman Library.

Unity Week will culminate on Friday, Jan. 23, with the tearing down of the "Wall of Hate" at Noon at the Goodwin Residence Hall, a diversity-training program from 3 p.m.-5 p.m., and the Unity Bash celebration and dance at 9 p.m.
