Alvin Sherman Library, Research, And Information Technology Center At NSU Offers Exciting Programs For January

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Free programs for children and families are offered each week at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, a joint-use facility between the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and Nova Southeastern University.

In January 2004, the Sherman Library takes part in “One Book, One Broward,” promoting the reading of “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom with readings, discussions, and other special programs. The Sherman Library is also proud to host a prestigious traveling exhibit, “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to Emancipation.” Special programs are planned relating to these events as well as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.

January children’s programs include:

  • Every Tuesday – Mother Goose Storytime. Infants to 35 months with caregiver. 10:30-10:50 a.m.
  • Every Wednesday – Storytime Fun, ages 3 to 5, 10:00-10:30 a.m.
  • Jan. 14 – Winnie the Pooh Birthday Party: Games, stories and treats.
  • Jan. 15 - Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.,’s birthday.
  • Every Wednesday – Software Storytime. Ages 3 to 5 with parent/caregiver, 10:30-11:00 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 21 – Kids’ Club. Ages 6 to 12. 3:30-4:00 p.m. Crafty Kids: in honor of Lincoln exhibit and Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Jan. 22 – Happy Chinese New Year.
  • Saturday, Jan. 24 – High Tech Fun: Finding Great Websites for Black History Reports, ages 7 to 12, 1:00-2:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 28 – The Doctor Is In: NSU Pediatrician and Caregiver Discussion Time: “Flu and the Flu Shot.” 10:30-11:00 a.m.
  • Every Thursday (except Jan. 1) – Family Storytime, all ages. 3:30-4:00 p.m.
  • Jan. 29 – Celebrate Black History with Jazz, Blues, and Music Stories.
  • Saturday, Jan. 31 – Online FCAT Prep. Ages 8 and up. 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Young Adult Programs (Ages 12-18) in January include:

  • Thursday, Jan. 15 – Musings Book Club: “Catherine, Called Birdy,” by Karen Cushman. 5:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Friday, Jan. 16 – Teen Social Issues Club: Informal discussions about today’s important issues and trends from a teen perspective. 5:00-6:00 p.m. Topic: Standardized Testing in High School – Is it Helping or Hurting?
  • Thursday, Jan. 22 – Dead (or Alive) Poets Society: Teen perspectives on poets and society. 4:45-6:00 p.m. Topic: Han Shan and Zen Poetry.
  • Saturday, Jan. 24 – Mural Craft: “We Make Black History Every Day,” 2:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, Jan. 29 – Shakespeare Club: Informal discussions on his works. 4:45-6:00 p.m. Topic: “Macbeth.”

January Adult Programs include:

  • Friday, Jan. 16 – Free Poetry Reading: “Emerging Voices of Miami.” 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Literary
  • Celebration by “Gulfstream” Magazine, co-sponsored by the Hannah Kahn Poetry Foundation and Sherman Library. For more information, call Richard Ryal, (954) 303-5441.
  • Saturday, Jan. 17 – “Tuesdays with Morrie.” Film and intergenerational discussion for adults and young adults, ages 12-18. 2:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 20 – Introduction to Excel: Part 2, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of computer commands. Pre-registraton required. Call (954) 262-5477.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 27 – Film “Glory,” discussion moderated by Douglas Black. 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, Jan. 29 – Roundtable discussion with NSU professors. Topic: “The Emergence of Lincoln.” 12:00 noon.
  • Thursday, Jan. 29 – Books over Biscotti. 7:00-9:00 p.m. Topic: “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. Discussion for adults and young adults, ages 12-18. For more information, call Paula Adams (954) 262- 5485.
  • Saturday, Jan. 31 – Discussion featuring author Stetson Kennedy, 2:00 p.m., sponsored by the Florida Center for the Book.

The Sherman Library is located on the Nova Southeastern University campus on Ray Ferrero, Jr. Boulevard off SW 30th Street, between University Drive and College Avenue.
