for nursing scholarships and genetics education
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla. - Nova Southeastern University’s Nursing Department announced the receipt of a generous scholarship grant from The Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation for nursing scholarships and genetics education, officials said Thursday.
“This grant will help more students receive a nursing education, especially those who are interested in genetics,” said Diane Whitehead, R.N., B.S.N., M.S.N, Ed.D., NSU’s Associate Dean of Nursing.
Inspired by the strength of a little boy with the fatal Tay-Sachs disease, The Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation (MFRF) was founded in South Florida in 1998 to support education and research of children’s genetics diseases of the brain.
“For the past 10 years, our foundation has provided pediatric and genetic nursing scholarships to nursing programs throughout South Florida, including Nova Southeastern, and we’re pleased to make this important contribution to Nova again this year,” MFRF President Kevin Romer said.
Whitehead said part of the scholarship will fund yearly genetics education program for nurses. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education requires that nursing programs educate nurses in genetics.
“This money will help NSU’s program meet this requirement, not only for our nursing students, but for the community of nurses working with families who need information and counseling regarding health issues impacted by genetics,” Whitehead said. “We are most appreciative of the Matthew Forbes Romer Foundation for this scholarship.”
