Senator Geller Leads Lesson On Florida Government
To University School Students on May 23
Ft Lauderdale - Davie, FL.- Senate Minority Democratic Leader Steven A. Geller (D-Hallandale Beach) will give 4th grade students of University School’s Lower School a lesson on Florida State Government.
The Senator, who was elected to the Florida Senate in 1998, will speak on Wednesday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. focusing on the steps taken to get a bill passed into law. The visit by Senator Geller is the concluding chapter in a unit designed to teach students about the differences between State and Federal laws. Recently, students exercised their knowledge of Florida government by writing bills that were voted on by the House and Senate portrayed by classmates. The bills were either vetoed or signed into law. As a follow-up to this activity, some students ran for the Make-A-Wish School Committee and were taught the basics on how to make a persuasive campaign speech.
Geller is currently the sponsor of Senate Bill 750, the "Florida Better Quality of Life and Biomedical Research Act." If passed, the legislation would commit $20 million annually to fund a branch of stem cell research.
Geller served in the Florida House from 1988 – 1998. He currently serves on various committees, including serving as Vice Chair to the Education Facilities Appropriations Committee and the Committee on Regulated Industries. Geller was recently recognized as the recipient of the 2007 Broward Days Leadership Award, and the 2007 Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association Legislative Award.
